Our intention is for this workshop to take place in person, but it may be changed to an online format if not safe for groups to meet in person due to COVID-19. If we have to switch to an online version due to a rise in COVID numbers or changes at the venue, we will do our best to make a determination at least 2 weeks prior to this workshop date.

Workshop Overview: Suicide is a leading cause of death in the United States with over 45,000 deaths in 2020. In the same time period an estimated 12.2 million American adults seriously thought about suicide, 3.2 million planned a suicide attempt, and 1.2 million attempted suicide.

Engaging in ethical practice requires core competency in awareness and understanding of suicide as well as essential clinical skills to address it.

In this training, we will look at suicide through the lens of our cultural experiences, values, biases, and attitudes. We will consider suicide care as a social justice issue through a diversity, equity, and inclusion lens(DEI).

Our focus will be to understand the importance of relationally mindful and client-specific assessment. We will explore the components of collaborative and compassionate safety planning with attention to the imperative of creating safety with lethal means. We will describe evidence-based approaches to treatment interventions and management.

To enhance the accessibility of care, a panel of community partners will offer a myriad of resources for a suicide-safer community.

Learning Objectives: By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Identify suicide risk and protective factors, warning signs, cultural challenges in suicide care, and pertinent data
  • Describe the intersection of suicide prevention, social justice, DEI
  • Explore core competency: attitudes, beliefs, language, self-care
  • Increase understanding of and access to community-based supports
  • Expand knowledge of evidence-based practices for suicide safety: assessment, safety planning, lethal means, management, and treatment choices
