Even though the divorce rate as decreased over the past 20 years (along with the marriage rate), about half of all first marriages end in divorce, with second and third marriages ending in divorce at an even higher percentage (67% of second marriages and 73% of third). As a result, there is still a growing need for mental health professionals to acquire a comprehensive understanding of the divorce process and its impact on individuals and families. The proposed presentation would cover the following key aspects:1) Legal Framework: Providing an overview of the legal procedures involved in divorce, including filing for divorce, property division, child custody, and support issues. This section would highlight the role of psychologists in assisting clients during legal proceedings.2) Alternatives to Litigation, including Collaborative Divorce and Mediation: Highlighting alternative dispute resolution methods, such as collaborative divorce and mediation, and their benefits in reducing conflict and promoting healthier outcomes for all parties involved. I will also discuss discernment mediation, which is used to help couples decide whether they want to stay together.3) Case Studies and Practical Tools: Sharing real-life case studies and providing practical tools, such as checklists and resources, to assist psychologists in supporting their clients effectively during divorce proceedings.
